A REPORT ON ONE DAY INDUSTRIAL VISIT to
ENNORE THERMAL POWER PALNT
Date : MAY 31st , 2022
Place of visit : North Chennai Thermal Power Station
I year and II year students of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from SRMIST Ramapuram Campus along with EEE faculty members visited North Chennai Thermal Power station (coal based plant) run by TANGEDCO located at Ennore Chennai in Tamilnadu.
History:
North Chennai Thermal Power Station was constructed to serve the purpose of energy generation in the year 1970. We visited the 1200 MW unit. The Power Station has been a major provider of electricity in the Tamil Nadu and its production capacity has been improved over the years.
Experience in the visit:
We started our visit at 8.30 AM from our college in Ramapuram and reached the power station by 10.00 AM in Ennore with our faculties.
First, we were provided with the safety equipment such as helmet. Then we got introduced to the staff who were going to explain the functioning of the power plant.
We got to know what is a coal yard ( storage area for coal ), coal from different countries like indonesia and south africa is imported here via different sea routes as they have high calorific values and less percentage of fly ash.
Then we moved to stacker and reclaimer , where in the stacker coal is deposited for further use and moved to reclaimer to mill, grind, filter and cleanse the coal to a desired criteria . 1 week stocking is possible in this plant.
Then this coal goes to the boiler through a belt where the coal is burnt and at a certain temperature steam is produced from the boiler.
The boiler with steam inside it is connected to a turbine which in turn is connected to a alternator at the end .
The steam inside the boiler hits the turbine and makes it move from which a power is generated , this power is stored and further distributed. This is the principle in which the plant is generating power.
Next we got the chance to see the central control room (CCR) or the HQ from where all these machinery can be operated digitally for the most part. By this way it is way easier for them to find the fault if it occurs.
Here we got to know how they manage supply and demand for different sub stations. They maintain at the national frequency rate of 50 hz. From the HQ they can moniter each mill function.
Finally , we had a explanation come question and answer session in which we were told about the use of isolators , insulators ( gases like SF6) , MCB s , current and voltage transformers in a power Plant .
We then surrendered the safety equipment to them and thanked them for spending time with us and sharing such useful knowledge.
Then we started our return journey from the power plant at 2.00 PM and reached our college at Ramapuram by 3.30 PM
Outcome of the visit:
- The various processes involved in collection , streamlining and distribution in the energy sector was understood
- Discussion about difficulties faced by them and how they held a fruitful event which was engaging both in a technical and a experience point of view.
