About the Department

The Department of Physics, SRM IST, Ramapuram campus was established in the year 2004. The department offer the following subjects for B.Tech.

1.Basic Physical Science courses with laboratory for all branches of B.Tech programme in I & II semester.

2.Open Elective courses for higher semester B.Tech programme.

3.Ph.D Programme.

4.Engineering Physics course with laboratory for B.Tech-lateral entry students.

Vision of the Department

1.Focus on the thrust areas of Physics and Materials Science towards the Growth of Engineering Profession, maintaining highest ethical and professional     standards.

2.To expand investigational dexterity & ability of students towards practical knowledge in Physics.

3.To produce consistent results in every academic year and to assist students to understand the fundamental concepts in Physics.

Achieving academic autonomy and creating a system that continuously moves towards academic excellence. Increase R&D output to reach the goal in the frontier areas of Physics.

Unique Features of the Department

1.Excellence in research and teaching has been the hallmark of the Physics Department at the Ramapuram campus ever since its inception.

2.Highly qualified and dedicated faculty members are the backbone of the Department.

3.The department has four research projects funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST)-Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India and two projects funded by SRM IST to the tune of more than 80 Lakhs.

4.There are three research laboratories in the department – Crystal Growth, Multiferroics and Computational Physics Laboratory.

5.Faculty Members have published more than 120 papers in WoS/ SCI/SCOPUS Indexed Journals in the last 3 years.

6.Energetic research is being carried out in the field of X-ray Crystallography, Crystallographic studies on drug molecules, Dielectric Studies, Crystal Growth, Spectroscopy, Electronic Structure of Materials, Nanomaterials, Ceramic Compounds and Nonlinear Dynamics.

7.The Department has collaborative Research with National/International Institutes/ Universities.

8.Faculty members relentlessly enhance their knowledge by pursuing online courses.

9.Department offers Ph.D programme and research scholars are actively involved in research under eleven recognized Ph.D supervisors.

10.Organized Eight National Conferences on Hierarchically Structured Materials funded by Government Funding Agencies like Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST)-Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Science City, Tamilnadu.

11.Organized Virtual International Conference on Hierarchically Structured Materials (ICHSM 2021) in April 2021 and (ICHSM 2022) in March 2022.

12.Organized National Workshops on Materials Characterization Techniques, Renewable Energy Resources funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and Workshop on Indian Nuclear Programme in association with Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).

13.Organized Refresher Courses, Guest Lectures, Mini Project Contests and Science, Engineering & Technology Exhibition in association with Tamilnadu Science and Technology Centre (TNSTC), Chennai for young budding Engineers.

14.Organized Two-Week Faculty Development Programme in August 2020 and September 2021.

15.National Skill India Programme (Jigyasa) in association with Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI) – Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Bhopal) in August 2020 and July 2021.

16.Organized Webinars, Virtual Symposium, Faculty Development Programme, National Seminars, Workshops, in association with Government Organizations (Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Kalpakkam Chapter, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR).

17.Organized “One Week Online Faculty development program on Advanced Computational and Experimental Research in Physics” during 20-27th June 2022.
