One Day International Virtual workshop
“Introduction to Mathematical Ecology”
Mathematical ecology is an area of applied mathematics concerned with applications of mathematical concepts, tools and techniques, usually in the form of mathematical models, to problems arising in population dynamics, ecology and evolution.
As Mathematical modelling in ecology plays a very special role, the department of Mathematics, SRMIST, Ramapuram has organised an International virtual workshop on Introduction to Mathematical Ecology on 04.02.2022 for faculty members and research scholars.
Date & Time:
4th February 2022
02.00 – 04.00 PM IST
Topic:
Introduction to Mathematical Ecology
Resource Person:
Dr. Patrick Mimphis Tchepmo Djomegni,
School of Mathematics and Statistics,
North West University,
Potchefstroom Campus,
South Africa.
Dr. Patrick Mimphis started the session by elucidating the term Ecology – as the scientific study of interactions between living organisms and their natural environment. He explained about Physiological ecology, Population ecology, Behavioural ecology, community ecology and ecosystems ecology.
In the first session he described about Intraspecific interacting models namely – Malthusian growth model, Logistic growth model and cubic growth models. He explained about developing a mathematical model that describes the time evolution of a population size where the population size can be affected by demographic effects such as birth, death, immigration and emigration.
He detailed about interspecific interacting models namely – Competition model, Mutualism model, Predator-prey or host -parasite model.
In the second session he explained Simple models namely Consumer -resource model, Tritrophic food chain model, Harvesting model with mutual defense, PDE model, Pattern Formation.
Nearly 200 participants from all over the world participated in this International Virtual Workshop. Participants enthusiastically participated in the interactive session and requested the organizers to organize many more such programs.
