World Cancer Day observed on February 4 each year aims to save millions of preventable deaths by raising awareness and education about cancer. This World Cancer Day, we recognize that our commitment to act will lead to powerful progress in reducing the global impact of cancer.
Owing to World Cancer Day, the Department of Mathematics on February 4, 2020 arranged a guest lecture for the students and faculty members on “Preventive Oncology” by Dr. Sumana Premkumar, Senior Consultant Oncologist, SIMS Hospital Vadapalani. The guest lecture began at 2.00 pm in Library AV Hall. Dr. Shakeela Sathish, Head, Department of Mathematics welcomed the gathering.
Dr. Sumana Premkumar discussed about normal cells, various types of cancer and treatments for them. Primary and secondary prevention, prophylaxis, prevention strategies, commonest cancers, cancers suitable for screening and symptoms.
On the=is occasion a Poster making competition was organized on cancer awareness to the students of B.Sc., Mathematics and further prizes were distributed to the winners of the competition by the guest speaker. First Prize was won by Manthra B.V, Tasneem R, Harini S S, Pavithra Y V won the second prize and the third prize by Indhira G, Janet Joseph J.
Dr. K. Anitha, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics proposed the vote of thanks. The guest lecture provided awareness of cancer and encouraged its prevention, detection and treatment.
