TWO WEEK FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ON ADVANCES IN COMPUTATIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN PHYSICS

Dr.Ammasi Periasamy Director & Founder of W.M. Keck Center for Cellular Imaging, Professor, Dept. of Biology & Biomedical Engineering, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA. He delivered a Keynote Address followed by a talk on Investigation of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Cancer : Two Photon FLIRR Microscopy. Dr. Ammasi Periasamy explained the recent technological developments happening in the field of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Microscopy (FRET), FLIM-FRET Microscopy in screening Prostate, Cervical and Blood cancer. He elaborated on ongoing research in the field of Cancer Metabolism and also discussed FRET Microscopy which enables study of protein interactions in live cells and metabolic changes of non-adherent Leukemia cells.
Dr.Masaru SHIMOMURA Professor, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan gave a talk on An Introduction to X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and its surface Quantitative Technique. Dr. Masaru SHIMOMURA explained about the Crystal Structure Analysis, Defects and Impurity Analysis by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS). He explained about the surface sensitivity of XPS and latest techniques.
Prof A. Thamizhavel Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR)Mumbai gave a talk on A primer of Crystal Structure and Crystal Growth of Rare-earth Intermetallic Compounds. Prof A. Thamizhavel explained about the types of crystal structure, Wyckoff positions, how to calculate the number of atoms in a unit cell and crystal growth Techniques. He also explained about the interpretation of resistivity property for the rare earth intermetallics.
Dr. V. Nirmal Kumar Scientist, Department of Advanced Materials Technology, CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Bhubaneswar gave a talk on Growth Kinetics of InGaSb Ternary Alloys under Microgravity and Normal Gravity Conditions. Dr. V. Nirmal Kumar explained about the effects of gravity, orientation and segregation of the crystals. He enumerated that the growth rate was more under microgravity and suitable to grow large size crystals. He explained about the differences between Ga and Sb faces in GaSb.
Dr. Sharmini Gopinathan Lecturer, Faculty of Management, Multimedia University, Malaysia gave a talk on “Innovative Teaching Strategies for the 21st Century. Dr. Sharmini Gopinathan explained the key elements contribute to the development of this new pedagogy. She also explained about the five pedagogical practices to improve online course delivery. Dr. Sharmini explained in her session about the impact on teaching and course design and gave tips and tricks for innovative teaching.
Prof. P. Elumalai Head, Department of Green Energy Technology, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, gave a talk on “High performance electrode materials for energy storage applications”. Prof. P. Elumalai, explained about the current energy system and explained the alternate energy source. In the alternate energy source he explained about the Batteries and Supercapacitors. Prof. Elumalai explained about the fabrication, working and applications of Li-ion Battery. Finally he gave an overview about supercapacitors.
Dr. Nirmalesh Naveen Research Associate, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, The University of Sheffield, UK, gave a talk on “A deep- dive into understanding the degradation mechanism in NMC811- A next generation cathode Material for electric vehicles”. Dr. Nirmalesh Naveen explained about the general degradation mechanism and use of de-oxygenated water and Nitrogen in layered hydroxide precursors. He also explained about the difference in capacity and capacity retention when samples are prepared under different heating conditions. Dr. Nirmalesh Naveen finally explained on the impact of morphological difference on the electrode’s performance.
Dr. D. Paul Joseph Assistant Professor, Department of Physics NIT, Warangal gave a talk on Thin Films- Basics and Advanced Applications. Dr.D.Paul Joseph explained the thin film growth and classification of growth mode. He also explained about the factors influencing the growth and quality of thin films. He elaborately explained the Spray Pyrolysis technique for depositing oxide thin films and characterization of NTO thin films.
Dr. Manan Dholakia Scientific Officer-E, Materials Science Group, IGCAR, Kalpakkam gave a talk on Molecular Dynamics Simulations: The bridge to reality. Dr. Manan Dholakia, explained about the application of ensembles and different simulation techniques. He also explained about the use of molecular dynamics in solving equation of motion and boundary conditions.
Dr. A. Nataraj Assistant Professor (SG), Department of Physics, SRMIST,Ramapuram gave a talk on Virtual Lab: An Amazing Tool for Teaching & Learning during COVID-19. He explained the Characteristics of thermistor, Determination of Planck’s constant and characteristics study of zener diode using virtual lab.
Dr. T. Karthick, Scientist-C, Center for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET), Thrissur, gave a talk on Piezoelectric Materials and Devices: Current Trends and Future Scope. Dr. T. Karthick explained the origin, classification and application of piezoelectric materials. He also explained about the selection criteria of Multilayer piezo actuators. Dr. T. Karthick finally explained about the futuristic aspects on application of piezoelectric materials for device application.
Dr. K.J Sankaran Senior Scientist, CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology(IMMT), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, gave a talk on Nano structured Diamond hybrids for opto electronics and electrochemical applications. Dr. K.J Sankaran explained about the growth and fabrication mechanism of NUNCD nanorods. He also explained about carbon nanotubes and grapheme nano flakes. Finally he explained the NUNCD application in energy storage device.
Dr. D.Gayathri Assistant Professor, Center of Advanced Study in Crystallography and Biophysics, University of Madras, Chennai, gave a talk on Recent Advances In Biophysics. Dr. D.Gayathri explained the biological functions with protein analysis, characterization techniques with conformational analysis like Cryo electron microscopy, Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. She also explained about the evolution of Coronovirus and its impact in the present scenario.
Dr. Aparna Neettiyath Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electronics Engineering, IIT Dhanbad, Jharkhand, gave a talk on” Laser Based Sensing for Insulation Condition Monitoring and Biological Cell Sorting”. She explained about the Laser induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS), Accelerated thermal ageing, scope in imaging LIBS techniques. She also explained Laser in biological applications.
Mrs. Geetha Shankar Senior Yoga Therapist & Senior Faculty, KYM Institute of Yoga Studies, Chennai. Mrs. Geetha Shankar elaborately explained about the importance of Meditation and Pranayama. She explained the Prana and life span, Cleansing our system through Pranayama and Dyana and showed some practical postures of Pranayama.
Dr. C.M. Raghavan, Marie S. Surie Research Fellow, Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom gave a talk on Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites for Optoelectronic Applications.
Dr. C.M. Raghavan explained the synthesis of pure homologous 2D hybrid halide perovskite compounds. He also explained about the growth of high quality crystal in SECT method. Finally he explained the wavelength tuneable random lasing for the grown single.crystals.
Dr. Mohit Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, PDM Univeristy, Bahadurgarh, Haryana gave a talk on Supercontinuum Generation in Nonlinear Photonic Crystal Fibers. Dr. Mohit Sharma, explained the optical properties of proposed seven ring unique fiber of photonic fibers. He also explained the Supercontinuum generation with a ultra short femto second with a very low peak power
Dr. K. Ashok, Scientist/Engineer, GEM/MMG/MME/VSSC, ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala have given a talk on Electromagneto Ceramics for Space Applications: Case Study. Dr. K. Ashok have explained about Indian launch vehicles, India’s communication satellites and exploring new territories of Gaganyaan. He also explained the applications of electro-ceramics, magneto ceramics, flexible ceramics and EM ceramics

Dr.B.Venkatachalapathy, Dean Research, SRM IST, Ramapuram gave the felicitation address in the valedictory Function.
The Department received around 200 participants in ZOOM Platform and 90 participants in YouTube. The participants include Faculties and Research Scholars from various universities and institutions. A very good feedback was received from the participants for the two week FDP program. The participants appreciated the department for organising two week FDP covering wide range of topics by eminent National and International resource persons.
