The Eight-Day Faculty Development Program of the Department of EFL, SRMIST, Ramapuram commenced on the 22nd of August 2022 at 5.30 p.m with the Inaugural address by Dr. Mukesh Yadav, Professor, Department of Basic Sciences & Humanities. He spoke on Academic Writing in Indian Context: Research and Publication and briefed on How to write a good research thesis.
The speaker of Day 1 Dr. Anand Mahanand, Professor, Department of Materials Development, Testing and Evaluation, The EFLU, Hyderabad deliberated on how to Write and Publish a Research Paper in the Humanities and in ELT.
Day 2 of the FDP focused on ‘Writing Abstract and Review of Literature’ on the 23rd of August 2022 at 6.00p.m. The speaker of the day Dr. Pankaj Narke, Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Humanities and Social sciences in the School of Engineering at Mahindra University, Hyderabad, explained in detail on the stages of writing an abstract, the Standard structures and strategies that are to be followed in academic writing.
Day 3 of the FDP focused on ‘Impact of Publication and Patent in Academics and Research’ on the 24th of August 2022 at 6.00p.m. The speaker of the day Dr. Saravanan, Senior Assistant Professor of English in the School of Social Sciences and Languages, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore delivered an enlightening talk on how to write research papers effectively for getting it published in quality journals.
Day 4 of the FDP focused on ‘Introduction to Research Methods and Methodologies’ on the 25th of August 2022 at 6.00p.m. The speaker of the day Dr. Govindaraj Chinnathambi, Associate Professor & Head i/c of the Department of English, Periyar University, Centre for Post Graduate and Research Studies, Dharmapuri, gave extensive insight on the importance and objectives of research methods and methodologies.
Day 5 of the FDP was a deliberation on the topic “Ethics in Research and Plagiarism”. The speaker of the session Dr. S.Veeramani, Assistant Professor and Head, Government Arts and Science College, Lalgudi highlighted the impetus with which research ethics are to be considered.
Day 6 of the FDP focused on ‘Patent and Copyright: An overview of Intellectual Property’ by Dr. Shabina Fatima, Assistant professor of English, Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Telangana. She dealt with the Product Patent and Process Patent and clearly explained the process and procedures of filing patent in India. She also elaborated on the types of application that can be filed and the rights of a patentee.
The seventh day of the FDP turned out to be an insightful lecture on the topic “Research Writing, Publishing and Academic Honesty”. The speaker of the session Dr. Santosh Mahapatra, Assistant Professor, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad highlighted the significance of doing an organized research publication and the ways to uphold academic honesty. He underlined with caution the challenges that the researcher has to face in the process of of a sensible and genuine research.
Day 8 of the FDP focused on ‘Plagiarism Detection, Removal: Tools and Techniques’ by Dr. Prajna Pani, Professor of English, School of Management, Centurion University of Technology and Management, Odhisa delivered a very enlightening talk through examples on the various types of plagiarism and how to prevent it using various types of paraphrasing tools. The session was highly an interactive one. There was a lot to take away from the profound experience and expertise of these experienced and learned speakers. There was also an interaction with the attendees towards the end of each session, and the participants who attended were engaged in the lively Q & A sessions and registered positive and appreciative feedback on all the days of the FDP. The program came to a successful close with supportive and encouraging comments from all the attendees and concluding remarks from Professor and Head, Department of EFL, Dr. V. Rema, including a brief report of the event and vote of thanks by the co-convenors, Dr. S. Savitha, Dr. K. Nagamani and Dr. Walter Hugh Parker. The entire event was well coordinated by them and the department colleagues gave their support for the smooth conduct of the program. Last but not least, over 1000 participants attended all the days of the FDP and it was very successful.
