The Department of Mathematics, SRMIST, Ramapuram, Chennai, India has organized two days international virtual workshop on Role of Mathematics in Machine Learning” exclusively for Faculty members and research scholars on 04.09.2023 and 05.09.2023.
Date & Time: 4th & 5th Sept, 02.30 PM IST
Topic: Role of Mathematics in Machine Learning
Resource Person:
Dr. Abeda S. Dodamani
Department of Mathematics
University of Eswatini, Swaziland
Day 1
Dr. Abeda S. Dodamani started the session by emphasing importance of Artificial intelligence. She defined machine learning as a branch of artificial intelligence, concerned with the design and development of algorithms that allow computers to evolve behaviors based on empirical data. She explained various applications of machine learning like medical diagnosis, stock marketing, online fraud detection , image and speech recognition, self driven cars and many more.
Dr. Abeda S. Dodamani explained the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning. She elaborated 5 steps in machine learning – collecting data, Preparing data, Training a model, evaluating model and finally improving the performance. The session was concluded with emphasing machine learning as the need of hour.
Day 2
Prof. Abeda S. Dodamani started the session with general introduction of Machine learning. She elaborated simple basic concepts in Linear Algebra. Also she explained the geometry behind machine learning, how do we present, manipulate and use the data in machine learning.
Prof. Abeda extended the session with eigen decomposition and geometric interpretation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and explained in detail how they allow to stretch the space in specific direction.
Prof. Abeda concluded the session with few rules that used for computing the derivatives of explicit functions, geometric interpretation of the definite integrals of the functions and the importance of optimization in machine learning. Nearly 150 participants from different parts of the world attended the lecture and actively took part in the interactive session. Both the sessions were very fruitful and received a lot of appreciations from the participants.
