INTRODUCTION
The Department of Biomedical Engineering, SRMIST, Ramapuram has organised an Industrial Visit for Second-Year Biomedical Engineering students at Trichy SRM Medical College and Research center, Irungalur, Tiruchirappalli on 26/10/24.
The day started with the address to students by Dr. M. Sakthi Ganesh, Dean (E&T) of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, on the importance of industrial visit in the presence of Dr. Balika J. Chelliah, Vice Principal (Admin), and Dr.Ushus.S.Kumar, HOD(I/C)- Biomedical Engineering.
At Trichy SRM Medical College and Research center, the SRMIST Team was welcomed by Mr.Dilipan, Biomedical Engineer. In his address, he emphasized the significance of hospital visits for Biomedical Engineering students and discussed the latest advancements in the medical field.
The primary objective of this visit was to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the research and operational activities at SRM Medical College and Research Center in Trichy, focusing on the Radiology Department, Operation Theatre, Biochemistry Pathology Lab, Ophthalmology, ENT, and ICU. The orientation program aimed to introduce students to various clinical and research opportunities available.
SCHEDULE OF VISIT 26/10/2024 – 10:00 A.M-4.00 P.M
The SRM Medical College and Research Center in Trichy features state-of-the-art facilities equipped with advanced technologies, supporting research and clinical advancements in radiology, surgical procedures, biochemistry pathology, ophthalmology, ENT, and critical care.
On October 26, 2024, the Department of Biomedical Engineering organized a one-day industrial visit to the Trichy SRM Medical College and Research center, Irungalur, Tiruchirappalli. A total of 41 students, accompanied by 2 staff members, participated in this educational excursion.
During the visit, the group was welcomed with an orientation program that provided insights into the medical center’s mission and various healthcare and research initiatives. The students had the opportunity to explore multiple departments, where they gained valuable knowledge
about ongoing projects and advancements in medical technology and patient care. This visit not only deepened the students’ understanding of practical applications in their field but also bridged the gap between academic learning and clinical practices. The interaction with SRM Medical College and Research Center’s expert staff and exposure to state-of-the-art facilities were highlights of this enriching experience. The orientation program provided a comprehensive overview of the medical center’s mission, vision, and ongoing research projects. Key points discussed included:
- Clinical Exposure and Research Opportunities: Students were informed about internships, collaborative projects with medical industries, and potential career paths in healthcare research related to radiology, pathology, biochemistry, and surgical technologies.
- Innovative Medical Practices: Emphasis was placed on the integration of traditional medical practices with cutting-edge technologies to improve research outcomes and develop sustainable healthcare solutions.
The students were divided into small groups and visited various departments, including Radiology Department, the Operation Theatre, Biochemistry Pathology Lab, Ophthalmology, ENT, and the ICU.
Radiology Department
- Focus Area: The Radiology Department specializes in imaging techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
- Research Areas: Imaging modalities for disease diagnosis, including MRI, CT, and ultrasound imaging, as well as interventional radiology.
- Technologies Used: State-of-the-art MRI and CT scanners, ultrasound devices, and digital imaging systems.
Operation Theatre
- Focus Area: The Operation Theatre is dedicated to performing surgeries with the latest advancements in surgical technology and procedures.
- Research Areas: Minimally invasive surgeries, surgical robotics, and patient monitoring systems.
- Technologies Used: Advanced surgical tools, anesthesia monitoring, and robotic- assisted surgery systems.
Biochemistry Pathology Lab
- Focus Area: This lab focuses on the biochemical analysis of samples for diagnostic purposes.
- Research Areas: Clinical biochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and pathology.
- Technologies Used: Automated analyzers for blood and tissue tests, PCR machines, and spectrophotometry.
Ophthalmology
- Focus Area: The Ophthalmology Department is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.
- Research Areas: Visual diagnostics, ocular disease management, and vision restoration techniques.
- Technologies Used: Fundus cameras, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and laser treatment systems.
ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat)
- Focus Area: This department addresses disorders related to ear, nose, and throat. Key observations included:
- Research Areas: Audiology, rhinology, and laryngology.
- Technologies Used: Audiometers, endoscopes, and surgical equipment for ENT procedures.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Focus Area: The ICU provides critical care to patients with severe health conditions. Key observations included:
- Research Areas: Critical care monitoring, patient stabilization, and life-support systems.
- Technologies Used: Advanced patient monitoring systems, ventilators, and life- support devices.

The experience at SRM Medical College and Research Center was invaluable, reinforcing my motivation to pursue a career in biomedical engineering with a focus on sustainable practices and pioneering healthcare solutions.
