On September 28, 2024, the Camogenics Photography & Film Society hosted a hands-on workshop titled “SHUTTER START” in the Block 3, 3rd Floor classroom. This event aimed to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of photography and videography, providing them with the tools to explore their creativity through practical training.

Opening Session
The workshop commenced with a welcoming address from Mr. Aravindan C., a dedicated professor who emphasized the importance of visual storytelling in the modern digital age. His insights inspired participants to consider the broader applications of photography and videography in various fields. Following his address, Sabarivasan, the President of Camogenics, provided an overview of the club’s mission and the objectives of the workshop, motivating attendees to delve deeper into the artistic process.
Fundamentals of Photography
The first segment of the workshop focused on the fundamentals of photography, led by Vinith Kumar (CSE-E, 2nd Year) and Deekshitha (AIML-B, 2nd Year). They covered essential concepts such as exposure, composition, and lighting. Participants engaged in hands-on demonstrations, learning how to operate DSLR cameras effectively. This interactive session fostered curiosity, as attendees were encouraged to ask questions and practice their skills in real time.
Vinith and Deekshitha utilized visual aids and real-life examples to illustrate key points, ensuring that even those with no prior experience could grasp the material. They highlighted how different camera settings affect the final image, emphasizing the importance of practice in mastering photography.
Introduction to Videography
Following the photography segment, the focus shifted to videography, led by Sowmithran (EEEA, 3rd Year). He introduced participants to the principles of capturing moving images, discussing shot composition, camera movements, and the significance of storytelling in film.
Sowmithran’s passion for videography was evident, and he shared valuable tips on creating compelling narratives.
Participants learned about various types of shots and the importance of planning and scripting before filming. This segment highlighted both the technical aspects and the creative potential of videography, encouraging students to think critically about their work.
Editing Session
The final portion of the workshop was dedicated to editing, led by Thasvan (ECE-C, 2nd Year) and Saindhavi (CSE-B, 2nd Year). They introduced participants to basic editing software and techniques, emphasizing the role of post-production in enhancing visual content. Attendees learned how to edit both photographs and videos, exploring features like color correction and transitions.
This hands-on experience allowed participants to practice their editing skills on sample footage and images. Thasvan and Saindhavi provided guidance, helping attendees understand how to refine their work and achieve a polished final product.
Hands-On Experience and Conclusion
The event concluded with a practical session where participants could experiment with different cameras and equipment. This interactive portion encouraged students to clarify their doubts and receive personalized feedback from the workshop leaders.
With a total of 45 enthusiastic participants, the SHUTTER START workshop was a resounding success. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn and develop their skills in photography and videography. The positive feedback highlighted the workshop’s impact, with many participants eager for more advanced sessions in the future.
