Venue : HITACHI ENERGY, CHENNAI
Date : 8/02/2024
Year : III year EEE Students (VI Sem)
III year students of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from SRMIST Ramapuram Campus along with our faculties visited HITACHI ENERGY.
We, accompanied by third-year students, embarked on an industrial visit to Hitachi Energy in Chennai on February 8, 2024. The experience was highly beneficial as we had the opportunity to observe SVC, STATCOM compensators, and various other intricate technologies during our visit.”
Experience in the visit
Static Var Compensator (SVC):
Purpose: SVCs are devices used in power systems to regulate voltage and control reactive power. Reactive power is necessary for maintaining the voltage levels in the power grid.
Components: SVCs typically consist of a set of thyristor-controlled reactors and capacitors. The thyristors are used to dynamically control the flow of reactive power.
Operation: During periods of low voltage, the SVC injects reactive power into the system, and during high voltage conditions, it absorbs reactive power. This helps in maintaining voltage stability and improving the power factor.
Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM):
Purpose: STATCOMs are also used for reactive power compensation and voltage control, but they operate on a different principle compared to SVCs.
Components: STATCOMs are based on power electronics and usually include a voltage-source inverter. They can quickly and precisely control the injected or absorbed reactive power.
Operation: Unlike SVCs, STATCOMs provide continuous and dynamic control of reactive power. They respond rapidly to changes in the system conditions, helping to stabilize voltage and improve the overall performance of the power grid.
Benefits of SVC and STATCOM:
Both SVC and STATCOM contribute to maintaining the voltage stability of the power grid.
They help in improving the power factor, which is crucial for efficient power transmission.
Reactive power compensation by these devices enhances the overall reliability and performance of the electrical system.
