REPORT
The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram Campus, Chennai, organized a National Conference on “RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN CHEMISTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (RACES-
2024)” on 27th September, 2024 associated with Association of Chemistry Teachers, Mumbai. The Chief Guest Dr. E. K. T. Sivakumar, Scientist, Educationist, Social Activist, Journalist, Philanthropist, and Visiting Professor, Centre for Ceramic Technology, Anna University, Chennai, inaugurated the event by lighting the Kuthuvilakku.
Dr. E. K. T. Sivakumar, started the Fore Noon session by delivering the Inaugural Address highlighting that education is the biggest tool to elevate. He addressed the impacts of nanoscience and technology on the fields ranging from agriculture to space industries and on how material science plays a pivotal role in shaping the research. The recent developments in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) and its applications in solar energy, dye and effluent treatment methods was pointed out. He also emphasized on the role of chemistry in all scientific fields and in any materials.
Followed by the keynote address, plenary lectures were started with experts from National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Anna University, Chennai. The first plenary lecture entitled “Material Research for Fuel Cell Applications” was given by Dr. (Mrs.) L. Cindrella, Professor and HAG, Department of Chemistry, NIT, Tiruchirappalli and the session has been chaired by Dr. A. Rajendran, Associate Professor and Head, Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai. The second Plenary Lecture entitled “Catalytic Functionalisation of Metallocarbenes Derived from Diazo and Non- Diazo Surrogates” was given by Dr. P. Anbarasan, Professor, Department of Chemistry, IITM, Chennai. Dr. K. Palanivelu, former Professor of Department of Civil Engineering, Anna University, Chennai delivered the final plenary lecture on “Green Chemical Processes for Environmental Remediation”.
In the valedictory address, best oral and poster presentation awards were selected and given by Dr. Helen. P. Kavitha and Dr.E. Iyappan. Around 180 participants from various parts of India actively participated and presented well their research works in both offline and online mode (Oral / Poster) in the fields of Chemical and Environmental Sciences Research. Finally, Dr K.S. Yoganand, Associate Professor (E&T), SRM IST, Ramapuram Campus, felicitated the event.
