Dr. N. Manimekalai explained that sexual harassment is not something to be ignored. . . it’s a legal requirement to prevent, prohibit and address this issue at “workplace”. She mentioned about Bhanwari Devi from Bhateri Village, who runs a self-help group with other women in her village, and the winner of“Neerja Bhanot Memorial Award” for her extraordinary courage, conviction and commitment.
She briefed about Vishakha Guidelines – Supreme Court of India Judgement 1997 -which provides basic definitions of Sexual Harassment at the work place and provides guidelines to deal with it. She explained about, The Criminal Law Ordinance 2013, this statute supersedes the Vishakha Guidelines for prevention of sexual harassment of women at work place.
She further detailed about the role of workplace in prohibiting sexual harassment of women, and how employer shall create a workplace free of sexual harassment.
She mentioned about the duties of employer namely – create and communicate a detailed policy, ensure awareness and orientation on the issue, Constitute Complaints Committee which is trained in terms of skill and capacity for building trust.
The event concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Lalitha. More than 150 women participants took part in this awareness program.
