A well-planned industrial visit for students of B.Tech civil Engineering and M.Tech Structural Engineering and CEM was organized by the Department of civil Engineering on 07.10.2025

- RMC Plant, Ultratech, Avadi Chennai
A visit to RMC Plant in Ultratech was made by students and faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram campus on 7th October, 2025. It is 18 km from Ramapuram. It serves as a construction activity in and around western and north-western Chennai, supplying tailored concrete grades for infrastructure, residential and industrial projects.
Typical sections observed at the Avadi plant included aggregate storage bays (separated by size), sand storage, cement silos, admixture dosing area, weigh hoppers, automated batching unit, twin-shaft / pan / planetary mixers (specify type observed), QC lab, truck loading and dispatch yard, water storage, and wash water treatment/settling area.
The engineer there explained various steps in the preparation of Ready-mix concrete. The students were able to see the real-time processes happening over there and got to know the importance of RMCs.
Key activities during the Visit
- Arrival and safety briefing by plant engineer/manager.
- Presentation on plant capacity, process flow, quality control, and safety systems.
- Guided plant walk-through (aggregate handling → batching → mixing → loading → QC laboratory → dispatch).
- Demonstration of a sample mix batching and truck loading (if permitted).
- Q&A session with technical staff.
- Collection of brochures/technical datasheets and closing remarks
Key Learnings
- Demonstrated how theoretical mix design parameters are implemented practically (control of W/C ratio, aggregate grading, admixture use).
- Importance of automation and instrumentation in maintaining batch consistency and traceability.
- Role of on-site QC in ensuring designed strength and workability; practical constraints like transit time and temperature control.
- Environmental controls (wash water recycling, dust suppression) as part of sustainable plant operation.

The industrial visit to the RMC plant turned out to be useful, educative and was a gateway to study the state-of-the-art technologies used for treating water. Insights about processes in RMC plant have intrigued the students to think about other new methods that are sustainable and eco-friendly for the preparation of Ready-mix concrete.

Industrial Visit to the RMC plant, Avadi served as a better exposure for the real-time water preparation of Ready-mix concrete. We were able to understand practically whatever we studied in our classrooms. In addition, we got to know the safety measures and quality control that is to be taken care during the manufacturing and marketing of RMC. Overall, the trip was quite insightful.
