The Third year students and faculty members of Department of Civil Engineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology,Ramapuram, went on a a visit to Poondi on 21st February 2019 It is about 60 km from Chennai, located at Thiruvallur district. It is one of the feeding sources of water to Chennai city.Poondi Lake or Sathyamoorthy reservoir is the reservoir across Kotralai River in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu State.
It is a huge reservoir with an area of about 121 square miles
The main purpose of the reservoir as told by an assistant engineer is for flood control, for irrigation purpose and to produce electricity. The base of the dam is cemented with barriers at the footings. These barriers are made to reduce soil erosion and velocity of water when it falls from flood gates. River sluice, canal sluice, flood gates, aqueduct, syphon aqueduct and super passage were also appraised

This Institute of Hydraulics and Hydrology, Poondi was established as an Irrigation Research Station in 1944 at Poondi, a small village in Tiruvallur District, 60 KM from Chennai, adjoining Poondi reservoir constructed across Kosasthalaiyar River for providing drinking water supply to Chennai city. There was uniform growth from 1944 to 1995 in the development activities. But after the implementation of Water Resources Consolidation Project from 1996 onwards, there is rapid growth not only in providing infrastructure facilities but also in research activities
This Institute is headed by a Director (Special Chief Engineer or Superintending Engineer) and is a wing of Water Resources Organisation of Public Works Department, Tamilnadu under the control of Chief Engineer (Designs Research & Construction Support), Chennai. This Institute is carrying out both applied and basic research. There are two Divisions under this Institute headed by Deputy Directors (Executive Engineers)
