The day started with 60 students of civil department 2nd year and 4 faculties assembling at college bus stop. The journey started by 09:00hours and we reached our destination-Kalpakkam around 11:00 hours. We entered the gate after the security check. The hospitality for us was good.
FAST REACTOR FUEL CYCLE AND FUEL REPROCESSING AT KALPAKKAM sanctioned on 3.7.2013 at an expenditure of Rs.9589 crore is envisaged to be executed through the technologies and expertise streaming from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) for recycling the fuel of Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam. The construction work is piloted by IGCAR.
FRFCF is a first of its kind project. The FRFCF project now under construction is scheduled to be completed by November 2018. The project Engineer has explained in detail about the project since its inception and took us to the place of concreting where 7200 cu.m of concrete was going on.
Coal can meet demands for 130 years if used for electricity generation alone. Hence, it is essential to reduce coal consumption for electricity,” he explained. He noted that solar plants were costly and disposal of waste was a problem. Then he concluded his explanation by giving lot of practical examples to visit and experience in Civil Engineering.
