The Department of Mathematics, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organized a guest lecture on the title “Importance and Applications of Mathematics” as a part of Faculty Development Programme on 21st August 2018.
The Guest lecture commenced at 3.00 P.M with the welcome address by Dr. C. Gunasundari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. The Guest Speaker was Prof. R. Sahadevan, UGC Emeritus Fellow, Ramanujam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Madras.
Prof. R. Sahadevan began his speech by saying that mathematics is the language of nature- to understand and study nature which is complicated and unpredictable, skill of mathematics is required. He explained how topics in mathematics are related to nature. He said mathematical training develops analytical thinking as it disciplines the mind to solve problems, which require planning and action.
The application of number theory in ATM password setting was elucidated. Further he mentioned that integrated chips are compressed by many algorithms in computers and theoretical computer science completely depends on mathematics.
The definition of function, function of one variable and function of two variables were interpreted with examples. Maxima and minima concept in real life situations were explained. Prof. R. Sahadevan concluded his speech saying that mathematics has to be studied with understanding as it provides a wide range of opportunities.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. C. Gunasundari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. Faculty members and students were much benefited from the Guest Lecture.
