The Guest lecture in “Backward Heat Conduction Problem (BHCP) An Ill – Posed Problem” as a part of Faculty Development Programme was organized by the Department of Mathematics, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram on 29th January 2020.
The Backward Heat Conduction Problem (BHCP) is also referred to as final boundary value problem. The Backward Heat Conduction Problem is a typically ill-posed problem, because of the measurement error of the input data. Most standard numerical method cannot achieve a good result in solving an ill-posed problem, due to the ill-posedness of the problem and the ill-conditioning of the discretized matrix, so, it is very important to find a stable and efficient numerical algorithm to solve ill-posed problems. The Backward Heat Conduction Problem arises in many physical and chemical fields and has attracted the attention of many researchers.
The Guest lecture commenced at 3.00 P.M with the welcome address by Dr. Shakeela Sathish, Head, and Department of Mathematics. Dr. M. Thamban Nair, Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Madras was the Guest Speaker.
Dr. M. Thamban Nair began his lecture giving ideas of Backward Heat Conduction Problem. Then the concept of Direct problem, Inverse problem were discussed.
The well posed and ill posed problems were interpreted. The severity of the ill posedness of the problem which very much depends on the decay rate of the singular values of the operator was demonstrated through an example. Then Ill – posedness of BHCP was explained. Regularization method in order to get approximate solutions based on noisy data was explained where Truncated singular valued representation method was discussed.
Dr. S. Parthasarathy, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics proposed the vote of thanks.
