On Numerical Evaluation of Oscillatory Integrals Event Overview
The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRMIST, Ramapuram is organized an Expert Talk (Online) “On Numerical Evaluation of Oscillatory Integrals” at 29.08.2025 on 2:00 PM (IST).
Resource Person:
Dr. V. Balakumar Assistant Professor
Department of Mathematics
NIT Puducherry, Karaikal 609 609
The talk “On Numerical Evaluation of Oscillatory Integrals” was specially arranged as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of the mathematical legends Pierre de Fermat and Arthur Cayley. The session began with an introduction to the importance of oscillatory integrals in mathematics and the difficulties faced by classical quadrature methods due to rapid oscillations and cancellation errors.
The speaker highlighted the main challenges such as cancellation, slow convergence, endpoint sin- gularities, and frequency dependence, and then discussed various specialized numerical methods. Applications in quantum mechanics, signal processing, fluid dynamics, and engineering simu- lations were presented, showing the practical importance of these integrals. He concluded the session by noting that oscillatory integral evaluation remains an active research field, with future directions pointing toward hybrid algorithms followed by an open discussion on computational efficiency and real-world applications.
Over 120 participants, including faculty members, researchers, and students from various insti- tutions, attended the expert talk and actively engaged in the discussion session.
