The Department of English and Foreign Languages at SRM IST, Ramapuram, recently hosted CUT 2.0, an event organized by the Foreign Language Club.
“The cinema is not an art which films life: the cinema is something between art and life.”
The Foreign Language Club (FLC) proudly organized CUT 2.0 on 27th September 2025 in Gallery Hall 4, an evening dedicated to films, languages, and perspectives that bring people closer to different cultures.
The event began with a light-hearted icebreaking session. Participants were energized with fun games such as Who am I?, Connexions, and Guess the Word. The games set a cheerful mood, filling the hall with laughter and camaraderie, while also sparking curiosity about the main highlight of the evening—the film screening.
The chosen film, Life is Beautiful (1997), is a timeless masterpiece set during World War II. It follows Guido, a lively and optimistic Jewish librarian, who uses his wit, humor, and boundless imagination to shield his young son from the harsh realities of anti-Semitic horrors.
As the film unfolded, the audience responded with wholehearted enthusiasm. Guido’s clever tricks and playful humor evoked bursts of laughter, making the hall echo with joy. But as the narrative grew heavier, the participants were visibly moved—the shift from comedy to tragedy left a deep emotional impact. The heartbreaking ending, where Guido sacrifices his life to protect his son’s innocence, brought tears to many eyes and left the audience in a reflective silence.
Following the screening, the students were invited to write reviews. Their reflections were heartfelt and thoughtful—many expressed admirations for Guido’s unwavering optimism, while others emphasized the emotional balance of humor and tragedy that made the film so unforgettable. Some reviews even drew parallels to real-life struggles, highlighting how courage and hope can shine even in the darkest of times.
The vote of thanks was delivered by our Club President, M. R. Yashvanth, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Nagaradhika, our HOD, and our Faculty Incharge Ms. Nivedita for their constant encouragement and support. He shared that the very first edition of this event had inspired him to join the club—and today, standing as its President, he felt immense pride in being part of FLC’s journey. Their guidance, combined with the students’ enthusiasm, was instrumental in making CUT 2.0 a resounding success.
