On 2nd of April, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:10 PM, the Biomedical Instrumentation Lab in Block III transformed into a buzzing hub of creativity, laughter, and innovation as it hosted the DIY Craft Challenge, a vibrant event organized by the BIO-NEXUS Club—the non- technical wing of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This event was thoughtfully designed to bring out the imaginative, artistic, and collaborative sides of students who often engage with technical rigor. With the objective of enhancing hands-on creativity, craftsmanship, and teamwork, the competition offered students a much-needed break from routine academic pressure and invited them into a space of fun, expression, and friendly rivalry.
The DIY Craft Challenge unfolded in three dynamic rounds, each crafted to test a unique skillset. The first round, titled “Recycle to Art,” encouraged students to channel their inner environmentalist by transforming discarded or recycled materials into aesthetic and meaningful craft items. From plastic bottles to paper waste, students stunned the judges with their resourcefulness, reimagining waste as art. The second round, “One-Handed Origami Challenge,” added a fun and slightly challenging twist. Participants were required to fold intricate origami using only one hand—while the other hand was tied—making this a true test of dexterity, coordination, patience, and team synergy. The final round, “Speed Crafting,” was a thrilling race against the clock. With limited time, participants had to let their creative instincts take over, resulting in a flurry of paper, scissors, glue, and bright ideas flying across tables as they hurried to complete their designs.
The event began with a formal inaugural address by Dr. Ushus Mam, the revered Head of the Department, whose inspiring words highlighted the importance of creativity and co- curricular engagement in holistic education. Her speech was followed by a warm welcome and motivational note from Ms. Puspa B., Assistant Professor, who emphasized the role of such activities in nurturing innovation beyond the classroom. The stage was then passed on to the student coordinator, Liya Diwan S., who confidently took charge of the crowd, introducing the event structure, rules, and motivating participants to give it their all. Throughout the event, volunteers Ramesh Kannan, Sudhir Varman, and Yuvasanjana played a crucial role in maintaining order, explaining rules for each round, and ensuring a smooth, fair, and fun experience for everyone. The atmosphere throughout the event was nothing short of electric— with bursts of laughter, brainstorming, and encouraging cheers echoing through the lab. Participants, either individually or in teams, showcased a wide range of ideas, from beautifully folded paper animals to creatively upcycled home décor, all while working under pressure with admirable enthusiasm and team spirit. The event was not just about crafting objects—it was about storytelling through art, bonding through creativity, and expressing oneself fearlessly.
The grand finale came with the announcement of winners by Assistant Professor Dr. R. Indhumathi, who lauded the participants for their originality, effort, and enthusiasm. The winners were met with applause and appreciation, but in truth, every participant walked away a winner, having learned something new and having experienced the joy of creating
with their own hands. The event closed with heartfelt gratitude extended to Dr. Ushus Mam, the faculty, student coordinators, volunteers, and most importantly, the students whose vibrant participation made the event such a memorable success.
Through this initiative, the BIO-NEXUS Club once again proved its commitment to nurturing all-round development among biomedical engineering students by providing a platform where technical minds could freely explore their artistic potential. The event stands as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary learning, and the club promises more such engaging and exciting events in the future to keep the creative spirit alive on campus.
