Objective: To teach the 5 revised and upgraded units of the course Smart Grid, offered at SRM IST for EEE students, to the teaching and student fraternities.
The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering conducted an IEEE Power & Energy Society sponsored “International Faculty Development on Smart Grid” from 27th July 2020 to 31st July 2020. On 27thJuly 2020 Dr. P. Sanjeevikumar, Professor of EEE, AalBorg University, Denmark gave key-note speech on the recent trends and research opportunities in power electronics and inaugurated the FDP, which was then followed by first lecture on the Architecture of Smart Grid. Dr. Arulnachalam Sundaram, Jubail Industrial college, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave a detailed explanation about the smart grid architecture.
On 28th July 2020, Mr. V.N. Ganesh of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram Campus gave a a lecture on the topic performance analysis tools in smart grid which includes the power flow analysis, contingency analysis and stability analysis, with reference to smart grid. A detailed discussion on Gauss-Seidel method and Newton-Raphson method in power flow analysis of smart grid was provide.
On 29th July 2020, Mrs. Belwin J. Brearley, Professor of EEE, of BSA Crescent Institute of Science and Technology covered the topic Computational tools and security for smart grid Optimization tools. Evolutionary computing techniques and challenges, network systems and analysis and cyber security standards were the major focus in this lecture.
On 30th July 2020, Prof. Dr. V. Gomathi of Anna University Guindy campus gave a comprehensive lecture about Renewable energy and its Storage. Also, the importance of micro grid, demand-response issues faced in it, PHEV technology, Energy storage and renewable integration technologies were broadly covered.
On 31st July 2020, Dr. N. Senthilkumar, Faculy member from Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai Campus gave an in depth information about Communication Measurements in Smart Grid. Latest wired and wireless communication systems used in smart grid, switching techniques, phasor measurement units, smart metering and its Protocols, Advanced metering Infrastructure, Multi agent systems were explained.
A practical approach on smart grid was provided by Mr. S. Shabeesh of DEWA, Dubai, on 31th, after the lecture. This was an eye opener for all the participants and research scholars to know about the real time applications of smart grid. The discussion provided avenues on both academic and research in the area smart grids.
Dr. K. N. Srinivas, HOD/EEE & VP (Academic) in an elaborate way explained to all the participants about the various topics which were explained on the respective days. This prepared all participants on the topics of discussion.
SRM IST has recently revised the syllabus contents of the course Smart Grid, and the main objective of the I-FDP is to teach all the teaching fraternity and research/graduate students on the revision. The intention of conducting this I-FDP is to provide a procedural reaching guidance to handle this modern technology in the class room.
The department of EEE is committed to organize out-reach programmes to enhance the new topics of interests in electrical engineering.
A total of 90 faculty members from various states of India and 15 research scholars attended this International Faculty Development Program. About 150 students of various engineering college were benefitted. Everyone gave a positive review about the event and they wanted more of such events in the near future.
